I have to say that I never went for EMDR because it would deal with things at "warp speed" and I was cautious about reading such things. This statement stands out for me: " AND, for the first time, I feel that I am with a therapist that is dealing with the core problem and not simply with the symptoms." Despite what seems to be little progress in your perspective, I do think the above statement says a lot. EMDR is not going to do the "work" for you, you are still involved in doing the "work". Maybe, you may find it useful to try some other approaches and only use EMDR at times. Although I was not as shut down as you say you are I did end up taking medication to deal with both anxiety and depression, maybe this is a route you might consider discussing with your therapist. Good luck.
