Welcome to the Behavior OnLine Forum on Shame and Affect Theory

I look forward to your contributions to this topic. As background you may want to read the very 'meaty' Behavior OnLine Conversation with Donald Nathanson. Don has found in the work of the late Silvan Tomkins a theory of personality with radical implications for psychotherapy practice. The Conversation spells this out in some depth and detail. However, affect theory requires us to think about the nature of emotion and about therapy in an unfamiliar way and requires more than one exposure to the material to appreciate it fully. At least this was so in my case. That is why I am so glad that Don will be an active participant and leader in this discussion. I will be here too as will Gil Levin, Behavior OnLine's Editor and Publisher. Questions about using the forum software are best addressed to me on the General Forum.

I am glad you found your way here and I look forward to our discussion.

    With my best regards,
    John Grohol
