Without commenting specifically on your case, I'll say a few things about selecting cognitions in general. Many people have "blocking beliefs" that interfere with forward progress. For example, "there can only be one man and Dad is it, so I can't be a man," or "I was told to sit still and be good so if I make progress and leave these symptoms behind I'll be bad" and many others. Often these beliefs are enshrined in a very young aspect of self, a child's logic is very concrete. The child's effort to gain or keep approval of a disapproving and rejecting parent is a very strong and enduring force. I find directly speaking to the ego state and supplying some of what it is hoping for is helpful (nurturing and acceptance usually). More conventionally, targetting the blocking belief itself, and an early memory of when it was put in place can make for a good early target. Sometimes printing out a post like these or related ones and bringing them in to the therapist can be helpfpul -- afer all, children were rarely instructed, "don't print out internet posts."
