    I may have misunderstood. I agree with having a specific target/cognition to focus on. I understood when you said - "I have a belief -- "success is bad" "being good is bad" -- that is interfering with my continuing with therapy. I am, internally, equating success in therapy(being a good client) with being praised for "bad stuff" when I was a child." - that you were trying to work up to being ready to do EMDR. This is why I suggested Louise Hay because in her book 'You can heal your Life' she shows how to create affirmations for your own specific needs. Part of one could be 'the past has no power over me I am willing to learn and change.'
    I have found using affirmations with my clients as we build towards using EMDR is very helpful in increasing self confidence or ego strength. It's just a suggestion, and it sounds like your already open to doing EMDR. Good Luck.
