Just as a preamble, we'll need to limit this discussion to the use of EMDR in combination with Reiko, so we don't take off on just Reiki. I don't know of any controlled research on Reiki, and surely none on EMDR and Reiki. I know of quite a few practitioners of EMDR who have gotten interested in Reiki because it is more gentle than EMDR (fewer abreactions). My experience has been just fascinating. I've referred a number of people, but in two cases, I had done all the logical EMDR targets I could think of based on patient's presenting complaints and developmental history. We'd made lots of progress but there was still more material we couldn't quite get at, becase there were still some symptoms (chronic fatigue in one, attachment/trust issues in another. I referred the patients to the same Reiki practitioner. and in both cases the next EMDR session produced a wealth of material, which hadn't been there prevoiusly. In both cases, if we conceptualize the EMDR targetting as doing vertical roto-rooting, the Reiki seemed to provide another horizontal layer across many previously processed EMDR targets - bodily held material. Most interesting.
