Brian, I see no problem with Dr. Paulsen's response to Martha. Dr. Paulsen made it implicitly clear that she was not saying Martha is dissociative. Quote, "(I'm not saying you do, I don't know. Simply that they have to check first) IF you do, you should only have EMDR from someone...etc" Dr. Paulsen did not give a diagnosis! You should know that screening a client for a dissociative disorder is standard procedure during the history and assessment phase of EMDR tx. So, Dr. Paulsen is not implying anything except that Martha may want to be sure that if she chooses to try EMDR, the clinician does what he/she is supposed to, as well as having experience in treating whatever disorder she may have. In addition, Dr. Paulsen encouraged Martha to move at her own speed in seeking EMDR treatment. I too encourage Martha to continue to gather information about her options for treatment, and when ready, to interview clinicians who are qualified to treat her, regardless of the modality. I'm afraid your response to Dr. Paulsen is sounding much like the critical, unwarranted, subjective attacks against Dr. Shapiro, driven by your own agenda. Please stop.
I would assume that Martha came to this particular forum because she was already interested in EMDR in some way, shape, or form.
