Affects as impediments to affects

    Shame and Affect Theory (Nathanson)

    Affects as impediments to affects
    by Rich Kuyper, 1/6/97

I am skiing downhill in the affective state of interest-excitement when a bear lumbers towards me out of the woods. Wouldn't my new affective state of fear-terror (I am afraid--not ashamed!) be an impediment to interest-excitement? Why is shame "any impediment to interest-excitement or enjoyment-joy"--couldn't fear-terror or distress-anguish also serve as impediments? What am I missing?
