You said that "reaction formation is ...ego protection which in the short run serves a purpose." What I want to know is what you think is behind that purpose, what motivates it. (And please note I agree with you that there is nothing inherently "wrong" with it.)

However, philosophers would respond that this effort would be a goal in itself. I figure it's both. It allows me to better understand myself and it helps me in better understanding those whom which I am responsible for 'helping' as a counselor." Again we are in complete agreement but you have not answered my original question. What motivates you personally to develop a better understanding?
Final question: You said "My theology, and my role within it, also directs me toward this effort." OK, it directs you, but what motivates you? (As you can see, there is such a thing as an Irish Bulldog that has been genetically engineered to sink its teeth into a question and not let go until gets an answer) (-:
