    Motivation/Reaction Formation
    by Ed Riemann, 3/9/97

Vick, How ya doin? Reaction formation is equivalent to self deception. It's kinda ego protection which in the short run serves a purpose but in thwe long run is dysfunctional. It's a rather human foible. Nothing wrong with it as long as it is not sustained. If sustained it can contribute to pathology.........................................................Motivation for a better understanding of human condition. WOW! You know how to ask the tough questions. This is both a personal and universal question. If one were a misanthrope (ie. Adolf Hitler) then a better understanding of human condition may lead toward a better way of destroying those with whom one disagrees. It would also lead toward power over other people. ..................................................................Lets assume (assumptions are dangerous as any geometrician can tell you) that a better understanding of human condition is an a priori condition for practicing therapy. Then it would appear to be worthy. However, philosophers would respond that this effort would be a goal in itself. I figure it's both. It allows me to better understand myself and it helps me in better understanding those whom which I am responsible for "helping" as a counselor. My theology, and my role within it, also directs me toward this effort. This is the best I can do at this point. Keep on asking these questions....it makes me think..........Ed
