Very intelligent questions. I would suggest taking a look at Shapiro's text (1995) for an overview of the component research and their problems. In fact, the component analyses with diagnosed civilian PTSD populations support the eye movement. The non-supportive studies are with multiply traumatized combat veterans and analogue populations. Neither appear to me to be appropriate for component analyses. Nevertheless, more rigorous studies need to be done there is no doubt. As for memories being "stuck"--I think that is shorthand and I haven't seen it in any of the professional literature. But, again, I'd refer you to Shapiro's text in the discussion of hemispheric bias in information processing. Some interesting studies were reported by Drake in the 1980's and 90's and are reviewed in that text.
