Two observations. First, I know literally hundreds of EMDR therapists. Some of them are conducting research on the role (or lack there of, of the bilateral stimulation), all of them find the question intriguing and well worth researching. I must say that I don't know any EMDR therapists who think that the bilateral stimulation is useless or unnecessary. A second observation is that my patients, some of whom I use EMDR with and others I do not, often ask things like "why is it so different when we are doing the eyes? How come when I just talk about it, nothing much happens, but when we are doing the eyes a lot happens?" This is not proof that the bilateral stimulation works, but is interesting.
