First thing to know is that there is the EMDR Institute, which was founded by Francine Shapiro, PhD, the originator of EMDR. There is also EMDRIA, which is the EMDR International Association, which credentials various EMDR statuses, including training sources, of which the EMDR Institute is obviously the premier one, but there are also other ways to learn EMDR, through people that have been certified to teach EMDR in Universities or professional schools. Usually the word "trainer", then, refers to those few individuals that Francine Shapiro has trained to teach EMDR workshops offered by the EMDR Institute. "trainer" can also refer to the other instructors that EMDRIA has certified as an instructor of EMDR, either the basics and advanced material, or specialty trainings. I, as one example, teach advanced specialty material (ego state and dissociation workshop) but not the basic material, which is called Parts I and II through the EMDR Institute. whew. EMDRIA also certifies two other categories: EMDR practitioners are certified to practice EMDR, meaning they have met the criteria for training and experience at that basic level. EMDR consultants are certified at a higher level of experience and training. For information on EMDRIA certification requirements, you can contact EMDRIA at www.emdria.org. Grandfathering came and went awhile ago.
