I never heard of anybody ever saying to only do EMDR every three months. That sounds like something got twisted somewhere. The question of how much to adhere to and how much to deviate from the EMDR protocols is a thorny one to all of us. Here are several points: 1) The very original protocol, published in 1987, has been modified. That's because over the next several years it became clear that EMDR was powerful and that several things needed to be elaborated for its safe and effective use. 2) The protocol has been sitting pretty much still since the early 90's, in terms of how it is taught through the EMDR Institute. 3) Francine urges us to use the standard protocol for several reasons. One is that research needs to be conducted using one protocol, otherwise we are comparing apples and oranges. Another is that it is robust for most purposes. 4) Many of us have been elaborating and interweaving EMDR with other established approaches, such as cognitive behavior therapy for panic, hypnosis for dissociation, and on and on. There is no controlled research however on these things outside of for PTSD and a bit on anxiety disorders. Mostly there are case reports. 5) New practitioners should certainly make sure they know the standard protocol in their sleep before they deviate from it. The original protocol is very robust.
