Jerry, 1. If you want to call me a crusader for "scientific truth" thats fine, a tad overstated in my opinion, but nonetheless fine. However, I have stated numerous times that I am not a crusader for cbt per se. I do not live and die cbt. More accurately, I feel strongly about empirically derived treatments based on good science. As is clear by my posts, I do not feel that based on the current evidence EMDR meets those standards. 2. My goal is not to "smear" EMDR. However, I have a number of choices. Two of the main choices include: 1. to ignore EMDR and hope that either sufficient solid evidence and support is developed to back up the miraculous claims or that it goes away, or 2. engage in a dialogue with professionals and the public about the pros and cons of EMDR and perhaps represent a voice that is respectfully skeptical of the claims 3. You claim that I employ a "BITTER,RANCOROUS TONE". I do not feel as though this is accurate, but I will certainly be more sensitive to the manner in which I convey my points. 4. I think its funny that you compare me to a creation "scientist" for several reasons. First, it seems that some proponents of EMDR use similar tactics to support their beliefs; convenient interpretation of the data in favor of EMDR. Second, if you knew me or my beliefs that would be an ironic analogy :) 5. In your second letter you comment on your zeal in defending EMDR and my zeal in challenging it and espousing CBT. Isn't that great! I think it is terrific that we both feel so passionately about this. 6. Again, I dont recall making personal attacks on Shapiro. I did apoligize to her if she felt that I was making ad hominem attacks. However, this claim of ad hominem attack is a rhetorical device that I have seen Shapiro use over and over to the point that she appears to use it almost automatically whenever anyone criticises EMDR. This also points to one of the clearest problems with EMDR (in my opinion) that she is too enmeshed in her creation to the point that any criticism of EMDR becomes ad hominem. Further, her entire life is EMDR and she will ostensibly fight to the death to perserve it (now I dont think that this last comment is ad hominem but will probably be dismissed as such). 7. I am not sure how to design a research study that would show greed and snakeoil salesmanship as the motives of EMDR and again these are your words not mine. I appreciate the spirited debate. Thank you for your comments. Don
A few points in response to both of your posts:
