Sleepless in Atlanta EMDR & 1) Childhood violent sexual abuse; 2) Accident Therapy; 3) Divorce Recovery Therapy We are considering options for therapy models for several issues my wife and I are working on and want an effective, efficient and successful approach. 1) I am married to a woman who strongly evidences having been violently attacked early in life. She is extremely reactive to having her neck touched, to anyone entering the room she is in with a knife, and to some sexual positions at some times - not at others. Her response is extreme fear and aggressive defense. She has had this pointed out to her by friends when she was as young at eleven. While she has no memories whatsoever of any attacks, she realizes that her reactions are probably abnormal. Has anyone successfully used EMDR in assault/rape/mugging cases? This also plays out in enormous swings in her interest in sexual activities from high-normal to none. These periods are reflected in other aspects of her personality and behavior. 2) I have been in several serious accidents over the last forty years - including high-speed face impacts, and have developed a serious problem with bruxation (teeth grinding) and the inability to return to sleep once awakened (I have averaged 4 to 4.5 hours of sleep per night for four years). I do not know that they are related, but I am VERY interested in resolving any residual trauma-related issues that may be causing this, or any other problems. Might these be related? Could I still have any psychological repercussion from these accidents (from 3 to 40 years ago: three serious bicycle accidents; two 30+mph speed skating crashes; four serious car accidents; and, one mugging) 3) Is EMDR ever used for divorce-recovery therapy? I was a much-loved and cuddled child, but since two amicable divorces after ten-year relationships, I present an abandoned-child syndrome. When affection is forthcoming, I feel/appear normal – when affection is withdrawn, or I sense or fear it might be withdrawn, I become volatile, reactive and depressive, and start pushing her away. Is the EMDR model at all applicable to emotional trauma as well as physical trauma? Is there a time ‘window’ of efficacy following the event(s)? Help. THANK YOU!
