The poster asked if anyone had tried EMDR and may well have been looking for a response from another person who has anorexia nervosa and has tried EMDR. The response given by Dr. Paulsen was quite appropriate. It must be noted that this is actually a professional forum and it is great that the general public is able to access it as well as receive appropriate replies to their postings. You do a disservice to many when you say "...you need to get tough on yourself...". The implication that people are not doing what they need to for themselves is an insult. Such a glib comment and message was certainly not appreciated by myself. Actually I have been told I need to be less tough on myself. Furthermore, I am someone who has done many things for myself in my effort to maintain a healthy life. Unfortunately one trauma too many has taken its' toll and I am grateful that I have a therapist who is not so glib as you seem to be. Believe you me, if I could have found my way through it all without the help of a therapist I would have done so. The worst part is that I knew I was doing so much for myself and, yet, my life was a constant struggle. I just couldn't figure out where I was going wrong. Well, thank goodness I had the courage to seek professional help and finally got a better understanding of just what I was dealing with and why, despite my very responsible actions, I was still struggling. Now, with the support of therapy there is some hope, but it won't be easy or be an overnight thing. Please, do not blame people and make glib statements which imply they just aren't doing what they need to for themselves. It isn't that simple.
