New, can you explain EMDR in simple manner

I was recently on another forum and refered here to get a better understanding about EMDR. I would like to understand the process a little better and find out how appropriate it would be for someone with a severe history of abuse. Wondering if person with history containing animal mutilation, and killing as a result of extreme violent abuse should be "awakened" by EMDR or could this possibly trigger an outburst of violence? Also w/associated symptoms of DID. Could this potentially throw a person into a suicidal state? If the person has a history of elective autism due to violence could this cause elective autism to occure again? ^A^
