You asked: Q: Is there any policy or set of guidelines that govern those eligible for EMDR training to "practice" EMDR without EMDRIA Certification? A: No, who would set them? Not EMDRIA, since EMDRIA has set them for the purpose of getting EMDRIA certification. Those who don't get it don't have it. Q. For example, if a practitioner only took Level I training, then decides to "practice" EMDR on clients, *without* Level II, and without supervision by an EMDRIA Consultant ... is there any governing laws? A. Training is always supposed to be both Levels I and Level II, although it IS appropriate for Level I trained individuals to use EMDR on straightforward cases. The fancy footwork is learned in Level II. There is no requirement in EMDRIA or EMDR Institute for there to be "supervision" by a consultant between Levels I and II. Only a requirement for "consultation" before certification. Certification occurs after Level II. None of this is law -- is is EMDRIA certification requirements. Also, the EMDR Institute has always said the training is a two part training. So Level I isn't enough, but its not a law. Q: Does EMDRIA govern those that can/cannot practice or is it up to the interpretation of each state's licensing board? A: EMDRIA has nothing to do with stopping people from practicing EMDR -- it only says who is and who is not certified at the practitioner, consultant or instructor levels. Q: I am just wondering if this is a "buyer beware" situation; that one should ensure that the therapist is EMDRIA Certified ... or go elsewhere. A: Bingo. Except I don't know where the elsewhere would be if you are looking for EMDR. And understand that there are possibly good EMDR practitioners who have chosen not to get certification.
