Hi, I have a friend who just had her first emdr session (after a year of twice monthly talk therapy). She is very dissociative and the therapist (client said she couldn't think of a "5") chose a trauma for the initial target (without rdi prep). The friend lasted about twenty seconds with eye movements and panicked and stopped the emdr. The therapist closed with some rdi interventions. The therapist is now out of town, and her back up does not do emdr. Besides the usual non emdr grounding and calming exercises what can be done to help? I suppose "more emdr"? But the therapist won't be back in town for some time. And my friend self injures and is often suicidal... (both contradicators for emdr, I know, but I'm not the therapist). I am concerned as, based on my own experience, I know how "bad" bad emdr can be. Sometimes I think there should be a 24 hr EMDR 800 hotline for just such situations as this. :-) It is such a specialized field. I apologize if this question (interventions after bad emdr experience) is not appropriate for this forum. Thanks, either way.
