Shapiro continues in her 2nd edition of EMDR: Basic Principles, Protocols and Procedures:

Before any complex methodology such as EMDR is evaluated, training with adequately supervised practice sesions is a minimal expectation. She elaborates on this at length. Two metaanalyses of EMDR research have indicated that practice fidelity was directly correlated with treatment outcomes.

Continued compliance with the protocol throughout the study is also key because of problems of drift.

The psychometrics should be appropriate for assessing a single traumatic memory if that is what is being targeted with EMDR, not, say, the MMPI or the Standard Interview of PTSD. The only appropriate such measure extant today is the Impact of Event Scale.

Participant selection should meet criteria such as 1) no secondary gain for continuing symptoms (disability checks for example), dual diagnoses and active drug abuse.

There is more - to be continued.
