I am treating a female client, 24 years old, who is generally functioning well, except for a recurrent fear that she may not be able to get to the toilet in time to urinate and that she will, consequently, urinate in public.
Therefore she tends to avoid more social situations then she deems realistic.I realise she suffers from the fear of utter embarrasment if this would ever happen (so far it has never happened).
Apparently she has this fear in particular while under stress. While often using exposure in vivo, in this case it seems (almost) impossible to have her lose control over het bladder function in public or to do what Ellis calls 'shame attack' excercises. I would appreciate any suggestion of the directions I could take in this therapy,
thanks,
dr. Joop Meijers.
