It is the fear of abandonment that probably keeps the client from getting too close. Then, the client abandons therapy and ends up feeling abandoned anyway. the lcient abandons him/herself really. Perhaps the client has to test the therapist a bit to find out just what will happen. What do you mean by "too needy", that really doesn't tell us anything and it is also a judgemental sort of statement. Why not discuss this with a supervisor or colleague? Sounds like you are new in this kind of work.
What limits were set at the beginning of therapy? Are the limits consistent? Have you discussed the clients responses with him/her? How do you invite closeness? How long have you been working with this client?
