    Shame in Institutional Settings
    by Don Nathanson, 8/11/97

Don't for a moment forget that one of the basic functions of the prison system is to produce and maximize shame in every one of its inmates. Nursing homes, or whatever we now call the domiciliary facilities within which we house our unwanted or otherwise unmanageable elder folk, are more subtle vehicles for control by shame. I've been working with John A. Jorgenson, Ed.D., Executive Director of The Center for Successful Aging, on a project through which we are trying to teach nursing home personnel how to spot and name the nine innate affects, and to diminsh that fraction of shame produced when previously independent adults are translated into dependent oldsters. John may be contacted at Johnjorgenson@worldnet.att.net.
