    I found it interesting to note that you feel the prison system is set up to instill shame as a form of punishment for inmates. I currently am a substance abuse counselor working within a institution. We are using a modified therapeutic community, modified to work with security instead of against them, hoping to reduce the recidivism rate. I have found that shame plays a major part in the recovery process of our residents. Shame involving their crime, the letting down of family and significant others, as well as expectations of self.
