    Men and shame
    by Margaret Blakely, 3/28/97

Oh, Jim! I plan to go back and read every word again carefully, but I just have to respond right away. How courageous of you to bring this subject up and to explore it the way you are doing! I have thought about male circumcism many times---I have two grown sons. When they were born some thirty-odd years ago when I was barely in my twenties, no one even asked me about it---I actually didn't even know what it was. There simply was no question but that little boys are circumcised and while it seemed like a mystery to me at the time, and faintly theatening to even know about it, I never really questioned it. My doctor was, of course, a man, and not to be questioned. Perhaps that's just an excuse on my part, but at the time, that was the only way I knew how to act. Anyway, as I have pondered the subject from time to time since, I have touched on many of the thoughts you have. The horror (and SHAMELESSNESS) of administering such pain to the very essence of a male child upon his arrival in the world---it leaves me speechless today. Surely the impact on humankind is immeasurable. I'm going back now to read your post again---thanks for all your very thoughtful work---let's keep exploring this!
