Stick to your positive reinforcement guns Margaret, they work very well.

And by the by, when your supervisor criticizes you for not having induced sufficient fear and shame in those you supervise, I suggest you tell her that those who have done in depth reviews of the literature can find no research that supports the concept that negative reinforcers are superior to positive ones in motivating workers.
