    Professional Conduct on this Forum

    I would like to suggest that somebody in charge (Francine, Sandra, Gil?) take a more active role in ensuring professional conduct on this forum. Specifically, I would suggest barring posts from those whose primary role is to provide heckling and harrassment rather than constructive contributions. Perhaps this could be done on a temporary suspension basis a time or two prior to permanent expulsion.

    I am NOT proposing censorship. In fact, I think that there are many elements of EMDR that may be the legitimate subject of debate, even when such comments may go "against" EMDR, including
    * role of eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation)
    * underlying mechanism(s) of effect
    * limitations of current research
    * range of applications for which EMDR may be appropriate
    * whether EMDR does or does not eliminate hyperarousal symptoms in chronic trauma even after the trauma has been resolved
    * complexity of EMDR and difficulty in providing adequate therapist training

    The fact that there are many remaining issues to resolve re EMDR does not mean that Rush Limbaugh-style tactics are appropriate in the discussion. Distortion, selective neglect of data, and harassment have no place here. Mental health professionals and academics in particular have an obligation to self-regulate in this regard. However, just because an individual may fail to hold him/herself to a professional standard, they should not be allowed to diminish the overall tone and quality of the discussion.

    I have tried ignoring this element in the discussion, and I have tried making statements opposing such behavior. Now I am requesting that it be controlled. It does damage and is not constructive. Thank you.
