Ricky, I agree and do not know what to do about it. This internet medium is different than a professional conference, at which no one would have the floor to speak anonymously. Professionals generally identify themselves and their credentials, and if they don't, are completely ignored in a conventional professional forum. In this forum, however, with public onlookers, there is no way to require standard decorum short of actually deleting posts. Additionally, when people do take pot shots or harass or distort, the one charged with tending the list on behalf of the subject (in this case, the subject is EMDR, and currently, I'm tending it while Francine is travellng)has a dilemma. If one tries to rise above it by not responding to distortions, etc, it appears that the distorter has made his point unchallenged. If one challenges the distorter, there is the risk of appearing that one has sunk to his level. Additionally, the same one or two problem people can log on under new names just to be irritating, or to pretend to have a different viewpoint. So even the drastic step of suspending someone can be hard to enforce. Remember, these people hide behind a cloak of anonymity. Why I can not imagine, unless it is to enable unprofessional behavior without the risk of approbation. In sum, I am also interested in finding a solution to this thorny problem, one that preserves the possibility of well-motivated debate.
