I took a course called Goethean Studies at the Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, CA which included meditation, painting, drawing, movement, speech, astronomy, botany and more. The meditation exercises were very carefully designed not to work from the lower chakras to the upper as in Kundalini. It was explained that in the older cultures when meditation was practiced in groups with masters who had learned from masters in a long tradition, then the individuals relied on the master and the group to keep them from "going crazy" or whatever. The reason you need someone there is that the lower chakras stem from powerful physical sources and if they are not properly "purified" before entering the heart, throat and mind zones (chakras) the practitioner can suffer mightily. The meditation that is being taught at Steiner College works with teaching individuals to be their own masters which requires years of study in not just meditation but other arts as well. These meditations are said to be a form of "spiritual science". Two words that in the future I think will become increasingly and importantly linked if the individual in the future is to survive and become truly free.
