Dr. Shapiro: About a year ago, I was speculating about the mechanism of action behind EMDR, and the oscillating stimulation involved made me think of rocking an infant to sleep. I hesitantly asked a patient to rock in a rocking chair instead of moving his eyes, and he had a very productive session. Since then, I have used a rocker in a number of very successful cases.
