I write from a nonprofessional vantage point but I think you,(client) experienced the same thing I have. Typing may not be totally rhythmic but it is PHYSICAL and bilateral and combined with focusing during journaling I, too, have felt as if I were walking though an EMDR session.
With the emphasis on 'containment' I think each therapist is truly different with whether they use this much. Mine certainly didn't. In fact, when she was explaining what the first session would be like and asking me to pick a very neutral event to demonstrate emdr with I accidently stumbled on a very significant life event that dated back to my pre-verbal stage. I had rated it and she didn't expect it to be any problem for me to deal with. I was sent out of the session and by that night I began processing it extremely fast on my own......in fact, it seemed to have a mind all its own! (no containment as she didn't recognize what was happening)
I experienced extreme coldness and shaking.Rapid thoughts and extremely strong body memories occured. The process of typing my thoughts calmed me and within about a week that chapter of my life was made an interesting chapter but no longer held the shear terror that I went thru as a child and again when I finally processed it. I was safe, finally. My therapist commented once that she had observed me and felt I DID process naturally with rapid, bilateral eye movements without being led or even chosing to do so myself.
Good luck with your emdr and keep typing if it helps you as much as it does me!
