The answer to this question varies for different individuals but I'll make some general comments. Individuals with good ego strengths, internal resources, and coping skills can often gain insight and progress by self-observing including thinking about level of disturbance about targets between sessions. Most people aren't inclined to actually take SUDS ratings, but if someone is, more power to them. Some people need to leave well enough alone between sessions, just living their life, and saving the self-scrutiny for sessions. This is because taking a SUDS level for them may actually be sort of surgical, reopening the material, and causing unnecessary discomfort. Like picking a scab after a surgical incision, and not leaving a wound alone to heal. EMDR is such deep work for many people that I typically recommend that people just go about their life, make a note of any disturbance they notice between sessions, and bring that in, as it points the way to the next piece of work.
