It is a common experience for people to have unwanted feelings that are not attached to specific memories or events. Some individuals may feel anxious, depressed, sad, tense, or whatever, and not be aware of the feeling's origin or cause. Therapists have different opinions about the necessity of remembering events in order to feel better. At minimum, there are very many mental-health professionals that believe that it is not necessary to discover memories of specific events. People can learn ways to lessen or eliminate discomfort without knowing its possible origin. Some therapists believe that bringing specific memories to mind and applying therapy techniques helps permanently remove the memories' negative effects.
Though it depends on the individuals, circumstances, and therapeutic approaches it certainly is possible to improve are moods, health, and circumstances ("heal") without certain memories.
