    Let's see.....

trichotillomania is neither a contraindication nor self-mutilation in the sense we mean it. If you had a sudden increase in it, you wouldn't bleed to death, although you might be bald. It isn't truly dangerous, though certainly can be socially and emotionally costly. ive

When I said, "checking carefully" I believe I was referring to screening for a dissociative disorder. The protocol is different for dissociative clients.

In general, level I training is not sufficient and I wouldn't recommend getting EMDR from someone with just level I training. After all, it is really part 1 of a two part training. And most therapists who have level II training still have a lot of learning to do to do a good job. If there is any question of dissociation being present then one REALLY needs to make sure the therapist is up to snuff in that area as well. I'm not saying you are dissociative - I'm sure I don't know. This is just a general caution that applies to every one.

Finally, Level I and Level II training will not prepare an EMDR practitioner to do EMDR for trichotillomania, though maybe that wasn't the question. Trichotillomania is a variant of OCD and the research leads us to medication and exposure and ritual prevention for OCD. There is a way to do EMDR for OCD and its variants but no research.

I do a combination of EMDR, exposure and ritual prevention and ego state therapy with good results in several cases and no failures for OCD (no cases of trichotillomania).

Hope someone else can post here. Best wishes, --Sandra
