Sometimes bls is alternately called "das" or "dual attention stimulus". The basic idea being redirection from an image to another focal point. And somehow the two integrate and lead to calming or insight. Is this the mechanism you are suspecting?

There is an article somewhere on the net about art therapy and emdr that sort of uses the technique you describe in a therapeutic setting. Drawing parts of self and using eye movements to integrate a new image...

    Neat stuff, art is... :)
