I am in my early forties, have a history of (multiple) trauma and have recently begun emdr. Have had 4 or 5 sessions of bilateral stimulation (I can't remember exact number!). We tend to do the bilateral stimulation one therapy session and use the following one to talk. We also don't necessarily then use the next session for bilateral stimulation - it depends on what issues arise and other therapy techniques may be used. I've had some pretty powerful responses - positive and negative. What I'm wondering about is what effects does/can the bilateral stimulation have on body functioning? In reading about trauma and emdr I realize that all the answers aren't really known about how the body copes with, responds to trauma and how emdr affects the body. It seems to me, though, that the actual physical impact/effect could be quite strong. In particular, I am wondering how it could affect the body chemistry and hormonal levels. I have noticed in the past number of months, we are not doing the bilateral stimulation every week, that my menstrual cycle has changed. I've always been regular - every 25 days and can sense when my period is due (pms symptoms of varied degree). But, this month, same as 2 months ago, I'm now 31 days into my cycle, have the pms symptoms and I'm waiting for my period to start!! Last month I was on time but my period was different than usual. As I'm in my early forties I recognize that I can be entering the periomenopause phase. But, it seems awfully coincidental that the changes in my menstrual cycle has occurred since the bilateral stimulation used with emdr was started. Any research on this? Anyone else have clients experiencing similar changes in their menstrual cycle after emdr treatment began? Any women out there who have noticed something like this?
