Hi, I read in Dr. Shapiro's book about how emdr cannot change negative self concepts that are appropriate... the example was a rape victim who lied to the cops. I am wondering if emdr has been used with "criminals"? Does healing change habitual behaviors and how can they change if one is still stuck in socioeconomic and subcultural patterns that are not conducive to such change? Those who are in prison, for instance, tend to have less opportunity to heal and less acknowledgment of their own pain vs blame for the pain they inflicted on others... This is appropriate, from a punitive standpoint, but stops well short of compassion. Personally, I find my own therapy gets "stuck" on the bad acts I have committed in the past. I can't allow myself to heal because I have hurt others... If emdr cannot change an appropriate negative image, then what can be done, therapeutically, to help me, or any such client? Thanks, in advance.
