Well, first off, my understanding via the research is that possibly bls is NOT emdr, per se, but only a component of emdr. You can have one without the other. Each IS distinctive, it's not a distinction I, or my therapist, came up with... Bls tends to be the most easily identifiable and unique aspect of emdr, and tends to be identified AS emdr. Shapiro uses the phrase "dual attention stimulus" (das) in place of "bls" and it's meaning is a bit broader -- to redirect and refocus the client. (If I am understanding correctly...) In any case, EMDR is not just bls or das... but a way of reconceptualizing trauma and it's resolution. In some ways it overlaps with the concepts McFall posted about... up and down processing in our bodies... but that's another discussion... Perhaps Dr. Inobe can weigh in on the feasibility and efficacy of EMDR without bls... although I will take the stance on this one topic that "if it works" I don't particularly need an expert or research to affirm that for me. I'll just take the healing and run with it... :) Peace to all.
