This contradiction in using bilateral stimulation to either reduce or sharpen images is seen in other therapy techniques also. Example, for me relaxation techniques increased my fear, led to panic etc. Yet, to be able to use relaxation would help me deal with the fear, panic. A person would think that relaxation tecniques would result in a positive reduction of the negative images, feelings. That is not always the case. With time though I have been able to increasingly relax without being triggered. It had to be done slowly over time and involved other techniques along the way. So it seems to me that there can be contradictions in may things we try, do, use. Who would think that a tried and true relaxation method would increase a person's tension, fear and so on.
