For installation, I should explain, it is my clinical practice and that of many others, without research to support it, to slow the sets down. Slower sets are needed for installing and/or building positive imagery. Clients report that the sets make the positive imagery feel stronger and deeper and more true. The slower set phenomenon for positive imagery, if its true and real like I think it is, may be because: 1) the client is mentally building new images brick by brick and if there were faster sets they couldn't keep up, 2) the client is listening to the therapist talking during the installation and if it were faster they couldn't keep up, 3) the slow pace is necessary because if it were faster it would push the processing of negative affect/cognitions/body sensations, and we don't want to do that in this phase of the work, 4) the tempo itself taps into a different brain wave, something closer to hypnotic suggestion. I know that when I forget to slow down the speed on my light bar during installation, I don't seem to get the same positive results as I do if I slow it down.
