Is there not some further follow up of this study which suggests that the greatest sustained improvement was in the exposure alone group? I believe I read this recently in a paper by Foa- I can't remember the reference offhand, but could check.
Also as one of the researchers/grantholders in the recently published Power et al study, may I also tentatively throw this into the discussion. In our study we faithfully followed Lovell's protocol for the CBT group (I trained in CBT with both Marks and Lovell) and we also followed the EMDR protocol as described in the training manual. Although our statistical tests showed little difference, on every measure the EMDR group had lower scores post treatment and effect sizes were greater. This was achieved in 50% less treatment time. Had the mechanisms of action been similar, surely there would have been no differences between the groups. I say this only as an observer- I have no particular theory to advance.
