Hello,
When it comes to EMDR and client history, I have a few questions. I know specifics about individual treatment cannot be answered, however maybe someone can comment about generalizations on background information.
My therapist wants to start EMDR next week, and we had a introduction session last week. However from everything I've been reading (along with Francine Shapiros EMDR book) I feel I may be going at this too fast.
I realize there probably isn't a "set" amount of visits before beginning emdr work as each case is different. However, isn't there suppose to be a lot of trust involved, or a good therapeutic relationship or alliance set before moving ahead with this?
I've never been in therapy of any type before, my history is of child sexual abuse. I have had a total of 6 sessions since Sept 27th. I told my story of the abuse, however briefly as we only talked about two particular incidents. I gave a slight history of teenage years and how I dealt with it, drugs, depression, parents, family life, etc. Therapist knows of my current living situations.
I am beginning to feel more comfortable with this therapist, however I don’t feel completely open yet. I have not shown any emotion, crying etc., and know I am still holding back.
Last session we did a intro to EMDR and picked a target memory (wanted the one memory that sticks out in my mind as the worst) picked a negative cognition, positive cognition, physical sensations, practiced eye movements, picked a safe place and worked on the relaxation afterwards. EMDR was also explained to me by the therapist.
I know only I can probably answer whether or not this is moving too quickly. However Im looking for generalizations on time needed before embarking into emdr therapy with histories of CSA.
One more note, my therapist is EMDR level II trained. This is not the only method she incorporates in therapy. I also put a call into therapist to talk over my concerns before next week. I am just looking for more opinions.
I am worried about overwhelming emotions, feelings, etc, after doing emdr. I also have concerns of new memories that might come up between sessions. I have a stable and safe home life, however I have many responsibilities with my four children and I do stay at home with them. Thank you for your time and any information you can give me.
