    Question for Practitioners: EMDR/DBT?
    · 08/01/02 at 11:27 ET

From an EMDR practitioner's perspective, is Dialectical Behavior Therapy compatible with EMDR techniques in helping a client with depression/PTSD/emotional dysregulation issues?

It seems to me that EMDR is based around processing past trauma as a means to make one's life better in the present - whereas DBT focuses on behavior modification and emotional skills development in the here and now, without regard to past issues. Therefore, would it be inappropriate and/or confusing to the client to mix the two approaches together (particularly if the individual psychotherapist and the DBT skills traininer are two separate clinicians?
