I've been researching EMDR as a possible therapy for my six year-old, who was raped by a family "friend" (once, we think.) The issues are complicated by his having witnessed me being physically abused by this same person; total time approx. 9 months. The long and short of it: yes, we're in therapy. No, there is no concrete diagnosis. He (my son) won't acknowledge that the abuse and its related memories harbor any bad feelings at all for him, though the manifestations seem clear: aggression and sexual acting out dating back to the date of abuse. Can EMDR be helpful when the client doesn't understand the association between his feelings and his history? What if the diagnosis is questionable, or multi-faceted? (ie, ODD or ADHD on top of the PTSD) Input welcome...either here or to my email:
