It is not recommended, in general, for individuals to attempt to do EMDR for themselves, except under very limited circumstances under the direction of an EMDR trained clinician. In general, self-EMDR will either 1) get stuck and not resolve successfully or 2) potentially, for some individuals, result in flooding of strong emotions. Neither outcome is desirable, and both can be avoided by working with a trained clinician. There is a whole protocol that needs to be used. Even a well trained EMDR clinician has a hard time using the protocol for their own self-EMDR, so clients would surely be unlikely to do well with the protocol.
