Ivy is referring to Interacting Cognitive Systems (ICS) a theory devised and promulgated by John Teasdale and Phil Barnard. They produced a book entitled Affect, Cognition and Change(published by LEA) in 1993. Most accessible is the article by Teasdale and Barnard entitled "two types of meaning in cognitive therapy", published in Behaviour Research and Therapy about ?four years ago. cant find the reference at the moment, but try looking at "emotional processing, three modes of mind and the prevention of relapse in depression" in brat again, 1999, vol 37 supplement 1, p s53-s77. John Teasdale and others have used this theoretical approach to drive their use of mindfulness meditation in depression.
