I'm not a professional, but I'm hoping someone here with credentials can understand and explain this dilemma. My therapist and psychiatrist diagnosed me a couple of years ago with major depression and PTSD. Recently, I was hospitalized for the first time, due to suicidal thinking brought on by emotional crisis. During my hospitalization, the attending psychiatrist diagnosed me with Borderline Personality Disorder and passed that diagnoses on to my current docs. He also suggested I read a couple of books about BPD. Since then, I have talked to my current doctors about this, and they say they don't use the terminology "Borderline", as it has negative connotations and is not quite accurate. They stand behind their original diagnosis. However, they agreed with the hospital psychiatrist to send me to a DBT group, thinking it would benefit me. What should I make of this? Is it common to have conflicting diagnoses? Does this mean nobody really knows what's wrong with me? (That makes me feel very anxious.)
