well i partly say that smileys are a replacement for face to face communication. although alot of the communication is also in the way we use the words and the way we type tham when using chat.(as you said, i think!)
the fact that computer chat becomes intimate very quickly also makes me believe that non verbal and non facial communication also plays a major factor in this.
do the interpretations the usage of emoticons / emotes of someone in chat compare to someone offline?
i agree wholeheartedly with your analysis of the way we interprete the gaps of information that is present that is what interests me the most as you can probably tell! i think the way people fall for each other online is also an interesting one too. it goes to show that attractiveness theories arent totally correct when they say we are drawn by someones apearance!
