I have not been on the board for awhile, so I missed this question. I think what is happening is this-- counseling boards are requesting a degree title in counseling and often not in a related field (although sometimes). When one does not have a degree title in counseling and it is in art therapy, it may not fly in many states in terms of licensure. Also, when a state has an art therapy credential on their books-- such as in New Mexico and Kentucky-- they are not likely to let you become licensed as a counselor unless you have a degree in counseling. I know art therapists do not like to hear it, but in terms of portability from state to state one is much better off being licensed as a counselor than an art therapist. The licensure laws for art therapists have not yielded third party pay and some art therapists have ended up back in school to get a counseling degree in order to work.
