In Illinois you can take the LPC and LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) if you have a masters in art therapy and worked in a supervised and paid position for about two years. I know for example, that LCPC, which is awarded in IL after passing a national exam, can be converted in certain states to their licenses. I know of a therapist with an LCPC who moved to Florida and transferred her credentials easily. However I have also heard that some states such as California have their own standards and requirements that are more stringent than other states and they will not accept other licenses. I also know that LPC itself will not allow you to work for yourself as a licensed professional. You will need to get the LCPC. Please find out if the licensing body in your state accepts art therapy as a "similar profession” as they do in IL, if so they may allow you to take their clinical counselor exam.
With LCPC you will be able to charge insurance in some states like IL (very recent) but not all. I wanted to let you know that you do not necessarily need to take a counseling course at the university depending on were you are. I hope this is of some help. Regards Hoda
